CASTANYADA

We celebrate Castanyada instead of Halloween, it takes place the same day but we do different things. We eat castanyes and panellets, and we don’t do trick or treat.

SANT JOAN

Sant Joan is a party which we celebrate on the 24th of June because it's the shortest night of the year and because of the summer solstice.
It consists of letting off fireworks at night around a big bonfire, and we eat coca de Sant Joan.

  NADAL

Nadal is the same as Christmas, but we do different things. The same day that Santa Claus brings presents, we caguem el tió, it consists of chopping open a piece of wood, and then some presents appear below it.

Another thing that we do is the night of the three magic kings, there are three kings who come from Orient and they bring presents for children.

CARNAVAL

In Catalonia people dress in masks and costume, often in themed groups and spend a nice time with all their friends.
People make floats and go through the streets of the city with music and at the end there is a prize for the best one. Then, all the people go together to have dinner and after that, there is a party until the sun rises.

SANT JORDI:
Saint George Day is on 23rd of April. Here in Catalonia is typical that this day, women give books to men and men give roses to women (usually between the ones who are in love, but nowadays also friends) .   You can find a video at the Home Page on the right bank.
